Esther (Abraham) and Jerry Hicks

Abraham describes themselves (note the referent "themselves" is grammatically incorrect but does convey accurately) as "a group consciousness from the non-physical dimension" (huh?! what?). They have also said, "We are that which you are. You are the leading edge of that which we are. We are that which is at the heart of all religions."

A Quote: We would focus on everything that mattered to us. It is so satisfying to hold a thought and to find the feeling place and then see the Universe conspire to help you receive it. Oh, co-creation at its best."

My Stumbling Blocks in Abraham-Hicks Method

Don’t get me wrong. I am in love with its postulates.

Still I cannot explain a few things…for those people (Abrahamites) who are thinking that here is a person for whom everything has to make sense…to you, I say…yes, in time, everything must fit, or else it ain’t going to get me to believe in it…because that is what it is about…BELIEF. Finally, everyone, no matter how philosophically or religiously or atheistically inclined s/he is, believes in something. For those that believe in nothing, you believe in nothing. Yes?

Getting back to the topic, here are a few things that still do not make sense.

1. “Thinking is what got me here, and will get me there” is the bedrock of this system. But, Abraham says that you need to keep thinking without attachment (cf. Lord Krishna in Sri BG), and that is how you “allow.”

Assuming this to be true, let me present you an example of where I am stuck. If my predisposition towards something is predominantly fearful, then no quantity of outward positive thinking will change my situation, because, inside I continue sometimes unaware, to give out fearful vibes. So, the end result will not be what I hoped for, but what I most dreaded.

So, to Abraham, how does one control one’s inward, “subcutaneous” thoughts? If you say, hypnosis, then, that is a whole another, murky field, at least in this regard. There is a Harlan Kirlstein who had this same question and thinks Hypnosis is an answer.

2. Abraham cannot with its system explain the different leanings of mountains of experiential theological Hindu literature with its exponents, savants and mystics (or at least I have not come across such Abraham material yet).

3. Abraham’s Concept of God — see different post on this site (same section).

4. Problem of Evil: Abraham says that there IS no evil, only low vibrations that get people to do those bad things. If that be true, then everyone is essentially good, and reformable. Not in my experience.

5. Others cannot harm you with their negative thinking: Other people’s ill-thoughts about you or directed at you cannot harm you. Oh my! Do I have news? Just look into any mythological literature of any religion, you will find countless mentions of curses upon curses, which are ill-will or ill-thoughts directed from one towards the other. (About Mythology, I recall Mr. Spock from one of the original Star Trek episodes telling Captain Kirk, “Captain, every myth is based on a fact.”)

6. The whole purpose of life, as far as I have learned about Abraham’s position, seems to be to come to the earthly plane to experience. That is it. Now, this seems boring when it keeps on happening more than a few times (think a big number). Where is the real purpose? OR a deeper purpose? Is there supposed to be one?

7. Finally, acknowledging that there is this “Law of Attraction”, the all-knowing, impartial provider or task-master (depending on what you are getting!), who is it, what is it? Who made the system? Who put this LOA/system in its place? Many unanswered questions.

But, no denying that Abraham has many things for us that are plainly awesome, uplifting and answering many of life’s seeming inequities.

My take: Abraham’s explanation is STEP ONE in the whole process. How to live a productive, happy and peaceful life on the earthly plane. STEP TWO: The blueprint for the next steps towards liberation from these constructs, I believe, is hidden in religious literature; probably in the very old scriptures.
